Bush pardons 14 and commutes 2 prison sentences

On the news today is the pardon granted by outgoing President George W. Bush on 14 individuals and the commutation of life sentences for 2 others. The giving of pardon is in the book The Broker
by John Grisham, where the outgoing president gives Joel Backman, the hottest lawyer in the city, a pardon after being convinced by the CIA director to wait and see who will kill him first. Sort of a bait. In the book, the other candidates for pardon were willing to pay millions for their freedom. In real life, are such deals really made? Hmm.
