Bucket List:Visit Europe

One of my dreams in life is to be able to go out of the country and visit Europe. I have always marveled at the culture, people and places in Europe and hope that someday, I would have saved enough to visit and explore it. I am actually envious of my good friend who will honeymoon there next year! What a lucky girl! And since she knows I dream of going to Europe sometime in my lifetime, she asked me for advice and I told her that it would be useful to check out Hotels Europa Spanien. I use the site to look for nice and affordable hotels in Europe. Another great site is Hotels weltweit buchen. I surf this sites to plan my future travel. My friend also find these websites easy to use and is actually planning her travel and itinerary, now that she can already choose her hotel. I told her that part of her itinerary must be shopping at Timberland Schuhe for those stylish and comfortable footwear while traveling in Europe. I am sure she can find the best style for a travel bug like her.

One day I will be able to visit Europe but in the meantime, I will be content in planning my itinerary and outfit, thanks to these useful websites!

Chasing Harry Winston

Did you like the book? Me, not really. Something was missing. I was waiting for a major drama to happen and it never did. The story was entertaining but not satisfying. It was blah, if you ask me. And maybe its just me, but I didn't really get the reference to Harry Winston. Sure, I get the jewelry, but aside from Adriana, who else was really after them? Emmy and Leigh were both after relationships and not the trappings of it, right?

But after discussing this book with a friend who liked it, I think maybe the reason I didn't like the book is because I cant relate to their problems. I am a 30-something mother of 3 who loves her husband and has a satisfying career after all! So if your are not all of the above, you may like this book then.

I Saved A Book!

I have already blogged that my house in Quezon City was flooded but my books were spared. But my other house in Dela Costa Homes in Montalban, Rizal was ravaged. While we were disposing of muddy clothes and linens, I saw a pile of wet books that my neighbor was throwing away as well. So I saved it!

This is the Doomsday Conspiracy by Sidney Sheldon, one of my favorite authors of all time. My husband was looking at me as if I have gone mad. He was wondering how could I throw away a TV, speaker, radio, 2 electric fans, and some more electronic gadgets without even batting an eyelash, but couldn't let go of a muddy, wet book!

I flipped the pages and saw that once dried, the book can be saved after all. So I took it with me and saved it.

Well, you would too if you could, right?

Ondoy Spared My Books

If you can remember my bookshelf, my Twilight series, Harry Potters and Narnia books are located at the bottom shelf. They are there at the place of honor, easily within my reach and vision. I measured it just now, that portion is up to my neck. Good thing (not that its a "good thing" really), the water reached only up to chest level and spared my beloved books! I was so busy worrying about everything else that by the time I remembered my books, we were already upstairs in my mother-in-law's second floor. We have already given up trying to keep our belongings above water, so the books were the last thing I could have thought of saving. And so when I remembered them, I rushed down towards the stairs and kept on asking if the water level is still rising. I think I expelled the breath I didn't know I was holding when my brother-in-law finally told me that the water was slowly subsiding. I couldn't have come back for them even if I wanted to, because the clothes I changed into were the last dry clothes I had. And because my mother would have called me insane if I went down again in darkness and chest-level water just to save those books! Oh well, they wouldn't "get" it anyway if I did. Only the thought of spending the night or days in wet clothes prevented me from going down again. But I am thankful that my books were indeed spared. Even if the sofa, TV rack, computer table, pictures, old reference books, shoes and a lot more were destroyed or lost in the flood!

I Love Book Sale!

I love book sale, not just the used book store, but any shop that sells used or new books at low prices. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling! Whenever we go to the mall, I usually gravitate towards a book store. My husband used to shake his head about this but has now grown used to it. He knows that no mall visit is complete for me without a bookstore visit. Even my kids are starting to love browsing in book stores.

Since I have so many books now, somebody asked me if I want to sell some of them. I thought about it and realized that I cant part with my books. I would feel as if I betrayed them if I should sell them! So no book sale from me in the near future. Unless my house is declared a fire hazard, that is!

Book Worms Meme

Here is one meme for book lovers out there!

Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?
  • Only if available. Usually chips or nuts.
Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of
writing in books horrify you?
  • Write on books? NO! Unless they are text books!
How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears?
  • Dog-ears mostly. My kids usually take out my bookmarks.
Laying the book flat open?
  • Never!
Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
  • Fiction.
Hard copy or audiobooks?
  • Hard copy
Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you
able to put a book down at any point?
  • Can put books down anytime. If you are a mother, this is a skill that you must learn and master without losing your patience. No matter how exciting the book is, a shrieking child or a frowning husband takes precedence.
If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away?
  • Wait until I can google it, or guess based on the context.
What are you currently reading?
  • Will start Lost Symbol tomorrow. Currently re-reading Rich Dad Poor Dad.
What is the last book you bought?
  • On a book sale, Hannibal by Thomas Harris
Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can
you read more than one at a time?
  • More than one at anytime. I have books lying around and I usually whichever is handy.
Do you have a favorite time of day and/or place to read?
  • While everybody is watching TV or whenever there is a lesser chance that I will be bothered.
Do you prefer series books or stand alone books?
  • Depends on the story. I love the Harry Potter, Twilight, Narnia series but cant finish the first few chapters of Southern Vampires.
Is there a specific book or author that you find yourself recommending over and over?
  • Sidney Sheldon, Harry Potter
How do you organize your books? (By genre, title, author’s last name, etc.?)
  • I wish I can organize them. But I store them in the bookshelf in no particular order(except the series that are of course stored together). My only concern is that they fit. Otherwise, they stay in a box.

Special thanks to Pachuvachuva where I first saw this meme.

Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

I love Sophie Kinsella. Her books are witty and charming, and you can always relate with the life of the heroine. They are not always perfect, but they always triumph in the end for having that innate goodness and tenacity.

The heroine in this book is Lara Lington. She was being haunted by Sadie, her great-aunt from the 1920's, who dresses her in 20'sgarments, hence the title. Sadie was her 105 year old aunt who died of old-age, and Lara heard her during the wake asking for her necklace. Of course, Lara was the only one who could hear her. She stopped the funeral and tried to find Sadie's necklace.

In the process of looking for the necklace, Lara go to know her great aunt and discover new things about herself as well. She found her man, got revenge and found Sadie's great love.

This is a fun read indeed for me. You should read if you love chick lit.

My Book Shelf

I was inspired to take pictures of my bookshelf because of KyusiReader's bookshelf project. The books in these pictures are not arranged in any order, aside of course from my collection of the Harry Potter, Narnia and Twilight books. And did you know that of these 3 series, I still don't have any of the last books? Yes, I still don't own Breaking Dawn, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Narnia's Last Battle. But of course, I have them anyway, thanks to ebooks.

This picture below is a big box of books I keep under my table at the office. I have read all of them, but haven't brought them home yet for lack of space. These books I either buy from the mall or they have been given by my bosses who share my love of books.

My next project would be to buy a decent bookshelf and make a list of all the books I own, have read and those that I intend to buy.

How about you, how do you keep your books? If you have a picture of your bookshelf, you may submit them to KyusiReader.

Wendy's Delivery Sucks!

Excuse me while I take some time off from reading and just shout this from the top of this Ortigas Building, "WENDY'S DELIVERY SUCKS!!!" And it sucks big time! And to think that the food is not that great anyway!!!

We ordered some food at around 4:03 pm and was told that maximum delivery waiting time would 45 minutes. I called at around 5pm to follow, since we had another history of waiting for a Wendy's delivery that never did came, and was told that the rider left at 4:36. The store nearest us is in Megamall so I was expecting it anytime after that call. It came at 5:22! We all lost our appetite by then!

So if you are hungry, never ever order from Wendy's! You will end up hungry and fuming mad like me!

Hannibal

I have been reading Thomas Harris' Hannibal , and it is a slow read for me. Not because I am interested in the story. On the contrary, I am so engrossed and fascinated. This is my first Thomas Harris novel although I have seen Red Dragon. But I have to take a break every now and then, lest I have nightmares. Even now, almost at the end of the book, I put it down and try to make sense of the story. I think Hannibal the Cannibal really has that effect on you.

What I like about reading this book is imagining Anthony Hopkins in my head. Since I have not read any of the books yet when I saw the movie, I always imagine him in this book I am reading.

This is really a good book and since that is how far I do reviews here, just check out the plot here. I will look for the two other Thomas Harris books I have missed.

My Sister's Keeper

I love the book My Sister's Keeper and I won't watch the movie! There, I have said it and although I love Cameron Diaz, I wouldn't let her ruin the book for me.

This book made me cry in its first 25 pages and reading it makes me wonder if I am really a good parent to all of my children. Or am I only the best parent for my youngest, or eldest or middle child? As parents, how do we decide what is the best for our children?

I would recommend this book to all the parents out there, and for all people who have siblings and for all people who know somebody suffering from an illness. Let me just tell you that the ending of this book really jolted me and broke my heart. This book is going to be on my all time favorites, really.

Not much of a review, eh? I'm like a gushing fan right? Well the book is that good. Not a waste of time I tell you. But be prepared to cry.

Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter

I just finished reading Ally Carter's Gallagher Girls Book 1 (I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You) and 2 (Cross my Heart and Hope to Spy). I became interested in the books when I saw a newsletter that the third book (Don't Judge A Girl By Her Cover) is now out.

The book is about 15-year old girls studying in a spy school and it reminds of Hogwarts and Harry Potter.

My review: if you have nothing better to do, you can read it to pass the time. It's like Sweet Valley High all over again for me. But not in a bad way. I am just too old for this and I cannot suspend my disbelief that much.

Twilight vs True Blood

I just found out that it is not good to watch the series before reading the book. I have completely lost my interest in reading the Southern Vampire series because I am also watching the HBO series, True Blood. Truth be told, I am not even done with the first 50 pages of the book. But I am only on the 3rd episode of the series. In other words, I am not convinced with the story.

Maybe it has something to do with having read the Twilight series first. I already have pre-conceived ideas on how vampires are. From the Twilight books, I have always imagined that they are good looking and nice people( well maybe just the Cullens). Whereas in True Blood, Bill the vampire is not that good looking. Okay, Edward is seventeen and Bill is like thirty three, but still. And Sookie Stackhouse is nothing like Bella. I sometimes find her stupid and too strong willed for her own good, while I sometimes think Bella just couldn't help it. And the vampire in True Blood has an appetite for revenge. He even killed Sookie's uncle who is very old, for having touched Sookie inappropriately years ago. Edward wouldn't do that and Bella will never asked him to do it. Not that Sookie told Bill to. But still.

Maybe, if I haven't watched the series before I discovered the books, I wouldn't lose that much interest in the story. When I read books, I always imagine how the characters would look like, and having seen how Bill and Sookie look in True Blood, the story doesn't have that much appeal anymore.

But this is not just true for Twilight and True Blood. Even for the Jason Bourne series and books by John Grisham, I have read the book before the movies came out and I enjoyed them because I was not disappointed with the movie characters. They are sometimes, how I imagine them to be. For the Dan Brown series however, I enjoyed the book immensely, but the movies were ho-hum for me. Tom Hanks just didn't fit the character in my mind. In he Harry Potter series, I have read the books long before they were movies and Daniel Radcliffe is okay as Harry.

What about you, do you enjoy a book after watching it first?

True Blood: The Southern Vampire Mysteries

The graph is cool!

Yes, I am a vampire lover. I loved Twilight and now I will start to read The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris which is the inspiration for the HBO Original Series, True Blood. It also now known as the Sookie Stackhouse books. I saw the first episode of True Blood, and it was very boring so I took to the books instead.

I will let you know how it goes after I have read the first book, Dead Until Dark.

What's On Your To-Read List?

I have been so busy lately with the kids and opening of classes that I haven't found anytime to read. And here is the latest book that I have yet to read:

The Big Bounce
by Elmore Leonard

Synopsis:
Jack Ryan always wanted to play proball. But he couldn't hit a curveball, so he turn his attention to less legal pursuits. A tough guy who likes walking in the razor's edge, he's just met his match-and more- in Nancy. She's a rich man's plaything, seriously into thrills and risk, and together she and Jack are pure heat ready to explode. But when simple housebreaking and burglary give way to the deadly pursuit of a really big score, the stakes suddenly skyrocket. Because violence and double-cross are the name of this game-and it's going to take every ounce of cunning Jack and Nancy possess to survive... each other.

With a story like that, is it worth a read or should I just use the time to sleep?

Night at the Museum 2: Review

We watched Night of the Museum 2: Battle at the Smithsonian courtesy of the The Medical City Resident's Alumni Association and The Medical City Resident's Organization at SM Megamall last week.

I didn't like it as much as I liked the first one, although I love the character of Kahmunrah and his lisp. And the cupids were cute. They didn't give much time to Owen Wilson's character and I sometimes find the flirting of Ben Stiller and Amy Adams, well, corny. I don't make a great review other than saying that I give this a 2/5. For a much better and coherent review, check out Spot.ph.

On Reading

Got this from Beliefnet-Daily Inbox Presents and just thought to share it here...

"[W]e are changed by what we read. Close that book, and you are not the same person anymore. Because of what you just read, your worldview--your understanding, your compassion for others, your ability to engage intelligently with others--has expanded a little. Books help us grow..."

Dan Brown: Angels & Demon

Because a new movie based on the book is to be shown soon, interest for Dan Brown's Angels & Demons has also increased. I liked Da Vinci Code the book, but not so much the movie. I hope this time it will be different. I am still re-reading this book and won't give any spoilers for those who haven't read it yet, but you can check the synopsis here at Wikipedia.

10 Greatest Books of All Time

Let's see if that is doable.

The Count Of Monte Cristo

I just finished reading The Count Of Monte Cristo. I liked it, but i felt that it was too preachy towards the end.

The plot is simple. Edmond Dantes was a young sailor, soon to be promoted a captain, and soon to be married to Mercedes. Then a rival accused him of being a traitor and he was sent to jail for 11 years. His father died of hunger and Mercedes married his rival fearing he was dead. In jail, he met a priest who educated him and gave him instructions to find a buried treasure. He escaped prison when the priest died then he went to get the treasure. He emerged again as the Count of Monte Cristo. Monte Cristo is the small island where the treasure was buried. He vowed revenge to those who sent him to prison and he helped those who helped him and that's what he did. Towards the end, he destroyed those who wronged him. This is the part where I felt that the story has become too preachy. Then, he lived happily ever after with Haydee.

I liked the book really, since Dumas' other book Three Musketeers is one of my all-time favorite. I just don't like the last chapters where it became too preachy for my taste. But the story is very good and well written.

In a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the highest, I give this book a 3.

Carrie by Stephen King

I have heard much about it but only read Carrie by Stephen King last weekend while we were at my sister's house in Taytay. It is was made into a horror movie, but the book made me cry. I was so sorry for poor Carrie.

The story is about a shy high school girl who was frequently the butt of jokes in her school . Her father is dead and her mother was an overzealous, religious fanatic who would rant and rave about damnation, evil and sin and sometimes would send Carrie to the cabinet as punishment. In school, Carrie had her first period during gym class and she was humiliated beyond relief by her classmates laughing and throwing napkins and tampons at her. Then she realized that she had telekinetic powers and began to practice. The girls who humiliated her were given detention and Chris, the biggest bully was prevented from going to the prom. Sue, one of the girls who laughed at her asked her boyfriend Tommy to take Carrie to the prom. At the prom, Carrie and Tommy were crowned Prom King and Queen, and while on stage, they were showered with pigs blood. The prank was initially Chris's idea, that her boyfriend Billy executed. Seeing Carrie drenched in blood, with only her eyes visible made the crowd laugh hysterically. She run outside but somebody put out his feet and she fall flat on her face. When she finally managed to get out of the gym, she fell on the stairs then that was when she realized that she had the power and punished everyone. She died from the loss of blood from the knife wound when her mother tried to kill her. She also killed her mother by stopping her heart.

The gym teacher said, after the fateful event, that she would kill herself before she will teach again, realizing that she could have done a lot more to help Carrie. Sue Snell, who also laughed at Carrie at that incident in the shower, asked her boyfriend to bring the girl to the prom, maybe as an act of atonement. But even those random acts of kindness were not enough to save a girl who had suffered too much.

I was teary-eyed as I finished the book and I realize that this is not a horror story. Carrie is a very sad story.

My Harry Potters

I am currently re-reading my Harry Potter's and I cant remember for how many times already. This started last month, and I am now on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7). I had a bad case of migraine last weekend which I know is caused by reading the books way past midnight daily. And yes, I still cry or laugh and get scared every time I read the books. My husband don't get this. I think its the same way that I don't get his excitement over something like, basketball or boxing. To each his own.

I already the Twilight Series and enjoyable though they were, they had nothing on my Harry Potter's.

What do you think?

Solons Horses Stabbed: Like A Dick Francis novel

The recent news about Tarlac Representative Jesi Lapus whose eleven horses were stabbed early morning read like a plot from a Dick Francis novel. While we were in Bohol, I got to finish 2 of his books, Bolt, Smokescreen and Rat Race from Dao Diamond's library. It was sick, what was done to those horses. It was like the novel Bolt, were the horses were murdered using a humane killer. Good thing the horses here did not die.

And about the book, it was an easy read and entertaining and does not require much thinking. Good to help pass the time.

The Family by Mario Puzo

I am currently reading The Family by Mario Puzo and I am not as pleased with this book as with his other works. I love the Godfather so much I even have the DVD's but I think I need to re-read this one to appreciate it more. Books I like instantly I can never put down, but this one I have been trying to finish for 4 days now, and no success yet. Though this book was started by Mario Puzo, it was finished by Carol Gino. Maybe, that's why it not as interesting? Hmm.

The book hopes to illustrate the Pope Alexander, Rodrigo Borgia as the first Don, but somehow fails miserably. There are cameos from Micheangelo, Da Vinci and Machiavelli but their appearance in the story does not create further interest.

When or if (I cant decide yet) I finish the book, I will tell you more about it. But don't hold your breath.
