My life according to the Eraserheads

This is a meme going around facebook but I got this from Reyna Elena and I would like to share it here. Of course, since my all time favorite band is the Eraserheads, I will of course asnwere with their songs.

The rules are very simple:

Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, answer these questions.
You can’t use the band I used. Try not to repeat a song title.
It’s a lot harder than you think! Repost as “my life according to (band name)”
Tag your music loving friends!

Are you a male or female: MINSAN
Describe yourself: TIKMAN
How do you feel: WITH A SMILE
Describe where you currently live: ALAPAAP
If you could go anywhere, where would you go: SA WAKAS
Your favourite form of transportation: RUN BARBI RUN
Your best friend is: TOYANG
Your fear: MALING AKALA
What is the best advice you have to give: HUWAG KANG MATAKOT
Thought for the Day: HUWAG MO NANG ITANONG

Yes, I am Reading my Harry Potters Again!

And I have lost count of how many times I have read them and still, I keep doing it. Unlike some books where I have to be in a particular mood before I can finish it or even pick it up, my Harry Potters can keep me company at any time. I can't read a Twilight book when I am sad or angry. I cannot read a John Grisham novel when I am too tired to think and so on and so forth.
I have just finished reading Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets and I will start with Prisoners of Azkaban tonight. Yeah, I love Harry Potter so sue me!

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

On my bedside is Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, and I have 9 Stories lying around somewhere in the house. I have been trying to finish these two books for a week now, with no success yet because I keep getting sleepy. The book does not catch all my interest at this point. Obviously, I am not an angst-filled youth and I cannot at this point of my life, make a connection with Holden. But seriously, If I had my hands on this book when I was in high school, I may have turned out differently! I may have done something really really stupid and life changing! The boy is so obviously troubled. I lost a brother too when I was young and I felt lonely and guilty most of the time back then so can you imagine having a hero like him? Gosh, no wonder this book was banned. I am not sure if that was right though. I will try to make another go at a review once I am done with the book though. As for 9 stories, am already on the 3rd story, The Laughing Man and I still don't get it!

One quote I liked from the book:
Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.
If I read this back then, this would have killed me.

Dear John

I love it! Its your typical boy meets girl, they fall and in love, they separated because he was in the army, she fell in love with somebody else, he came back but they cant be together anymore type of love story. That is the plot of the book by the way. It is a very easy to read book, the characters are not complicated, but you can feel the goodness of the characters. I cried several times while reading this and despite the unhappy ending for John (and maybe a little for Savannah) I still love this book. I have no intention of watching the movie because the keep saying its crappy. I really love Nicholas Sparks, but my favorite story is still A Love Story by Erich Segal. Now that is one love story!

A Versatile Blogger Award!

First, I would like to thank pachuvachuva for this Versatile Blogger Award and to my book suppliers namely my bosses Aldrich, Mickey and Lara and also esnips.com for free ebook downloads. He he. I would also like to thank Booksale for their low priced books because you know me, if its not free or if its not cheap, I cant buy it.

Anyway, to share the award and the love, here is what I need to do:
  1. Thank the person that gave you this award, so again thanks to pachuvachuva!
  2. Share 7 things about yourself
  3. Pass the award to 7 other bloggers
  4. Let the 7 bloggers know that you've picked them for this award.

So the 7 Things about me:
  1. I used to read as a form of escape. I usually have no baon for lunch when I was a scholar at St Paul Pasig, so I would go to the library and read. It helped pass the time but not the hunger. I was so skinny then.
  2. I started reading short stories and Tagalog novels of Lualhati Bautista, then I moved to Sweet Valley and RL Stine and then to Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King.
  3. When I was in elementary, my neighbor had a store and she rents out Komiks. I didn't have to pay her because she made me read all of them and I tell her what's good and what's crap. I also remind her of how the story was in the previous story.
  4. I don't understand it that my kids don't love to read.
  5. I only recently completed my paperback collection of the 7 Harry Potter books, after my bosses gave me GC's at Bestsellers. Yes, I am a cheapo!
  6. My husband gave me the 4 Twilight books in a span of 1 year: as a birthday present, Mother's Day gift, anniversary guift and Christmas gift. I loved how he took the effort to reserve and search the books for me.
  7. I have a big balikbayan box of books at the office, under my desk, waiting to be brought home. Sadly, I don't have anymore space at home for them! But I don have the heart to sell them or give them away. I love re-reading them

I pass this award to this 7 bloggers:
  1. Some Things Are Free
  2. Crayons and Pencils
  3. SOSYALERANG FROG
  4. Deliciously Spicy Moments
  5. Unchained Thoughts
  6. Mom's Wish Lists
  7. Ruthilicious

So spread the love!

Paulo Coelho's The Winner Stands Alone

Either my taste in books has plunged dramatically after reading many Jude Deveraux and Judith McNaught books (which I enjoyed) or this latest by Paulo Coelho is too boring, but it sits on my table for more than two months now and I am not the least bit curious as to how it will end! Maybe I was not in the right frame of mind when I was reading it, but it took me several days to even get to 20 pages of the book. It was too preachy for me. I am sure the book has a message for everybody, but I really think this is not for me. I know that I am not making a coherent review of the book but suffice it to say that I wasted my time reading this book (and I haven't even finished it!)

Jude Deveraux, Anyone?

Lately, the books that I like to read are those that wont require much thinking on my part. For me, Jude Deveraux novels fall in this category. The boy meets girl, the girl is not the same as anybody he has met before and they fall in love. I have read about the Montgomery's and the Taggerts, the Peregrines and the Chandler twins. I am now reading Forever, which is about another Montgomery and I like it. Yes, I like her books, not all but I stop reading when I cannot suspend my disbelief anymore. Just like in one of her books that I was not able to continue reading, An Angel for Emily, there was a part there where Emily brought the angel to a barbershop I think to have his hair cut and then the following day his head was aching and there was a bullet lodged on his head! I stopped reading at that part and went looking for another book!

For the most part, her books are not about air-headed women falling for haughty men. They are of women and men looking for love and somehow found it. I like one book where Frank, the eldest and most morose son fell in love with a nurse, a homely girl because she makes his cabin feels like home. My only problem with her books is I cannot remember much of the titles after!

I think at this point I should mention that I read ebooks. I download them in .lit format and read them on my laptop. Again, I need to add here that if i like the book, I buy them even if I read them already. So I am going used-book hunting this weekend to look for some of my JD's, he he!

Reading as a Punishment?

My eldest son, who is 12 years old , needs a lesson in respecting his elders and as a punishment, I am making his read my Harry Potter books. Now, he feels so punished! I used to bribe him a P100 per book, but he wouldn't read them anyway. He is so into his PSP and his cellphone, and basketball, that he has no interest in reading. I think its a good thing that he has no choice but to read them now. But as I was quizzing him about the second book he just finished reading, his answers came so close to the movie version! Or was it just me? So now, I am reading the books again so I can ask him some details that are not in the movie but are relatively important in the book. He started reading the books last week and he is now reading Prisoner of Azkaban. And I need to buy the seventh book today just so I have the complete series!

Now, can anybody tell me if what I am doing to my son is bad? I love these books and I truly feel that my son will learn a lot from them. But I don't know whether it is bad to force him to read. Hay, parenting tips anyone?

To Kill A Mockingbird

Would you believe that I have never read this book until last week? Yes, I am guilty of ignoring the classics and just going for easy reads most of the time. But when I had my hands on some classics from our HR's book sale for a cause, I got me some good ones. In my to-read list are Nick Joaquin's and F. Sionil Jose and War of the Worlds and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the kids.

Now back to To Kill A Mockingbird. I a touched by the innocence of Scout in her narration in the book and the innate goodness of her brother Jem which I attribute to Atticus. As a parent, I can only wish that I can be as fair and steadfast as he is. I will just let you read Wiki's take on the book for a review, but you have to read it for your self. I was particularly touched when Dill had to go out of the courtroom because he cannot stomach how the lawyer was being mean to Tom. And then I forgot who said it that when good men are being wronged, only children cry.

I hope you get to read the book. This is a good read for parents as well. I would agree that this should be included in the list of books you should read before you die.

Need Glasses?

Nobody told me back then that it was not good to read books while on a moving vehicle. And since I lived in Las Pinas city and went to school in Manila, I had a 2-hour commute each way, everyday. Armed with a good book, I didn't mind the traffic, the heat or the smell at all! But my eyes suffered though. I used to have bad headaches and was told I need to stop reading while on the bus to prevent it. And now, I have to wear glasses. But I am cheap and I hate spending for myself. But when I read Eric's Review of Zenni Optical, I know that I can now buy as many glasses as I need. Where else can you find Lowest Price Progressive Glasses starting at $8? So I became interested on how they became the #1 online Rx glasses store. I found out that they can offer their glasses cheap because they use no middlemen, and they do not spend on advertising and retail space. They also only charge $4.95 shipping for all your orders regardless of quantity. So you also get savings on shipping charges if you order for your whole family or for several glasses for yourself. If you want more fashionable eyeglasses, you can chosee to spend a little more and they are still the cheapest ones you will ever find!

Been Reading

My last blog post was in November and I can't believe that it is almost 4 months since my last entry! I have been reading as is my nature, but I haven't read a book worth blogging. Or maybe I'm just lazy or too busy, or both. Anyway, after the Ondoy storm, we bought us a new bookshelf.

Of course, I had the half shelf for my books, and the rest for the kids and their new toys. Can you see that I already have the complete Twilight books, courtesy of my loving husband? And beside it are my Harry Potter books, but I don't have the last book yet. There are no copies in any of the National bookstores I have been (I have GC's) so I am still waiting to find one. I have been busy tinkering techie stuff so I cant find the time to blog. I just bought an Philips mp3 player I can use while I am running, and I have yet to download songs to it!

Anyway, I will try to read more books and share my reviews about them soon. I recently bought a bag full of books for only P300 from our HR department's book drive. I just hope I was able to get good ones.
